Submission Guidelines
9th Annual Recycled Art & Fashion Show
Please take the time to fully read and UNDERSTAND this application. Only “hard copy” submissions are being accepted. Emailed submissions will not be considered. Incomplete applications will be discarded.
We are inviting artists and designers to submit works of fashion art to be exhibited in The RE Store Trash Fashion Shows in Seattle and Bellingham. Designs may be selected for one or both shows.
Recycled Fashion Definition:
Submitted work may be reasonably considered “recycled fashion” if it is entirely, or primarily, composed of at least 90% material(s) that would have otherwise been disposed into the waste streams.
Deadline:
All submission forms, images and the $10.00 submission fee must be delivered no later than 5:00 P.M., Monday, March 8th, 2010. Submission info is below. Please follow instructions completely.
The RE Store Trash Fashion criteria for construction is as follows:
- Materials used in the construction of garments MUST be post-consumer, post-industrial, or post agricultural waste, and must constitute at least 90% of the garment. Anything non-recyclable and destined for the landfill is preferred.
- Designers may use materials for construction such as glue, tape, dyes, marker, staples, thread, zippers, elastic, wire, Velcro, boning, buckram, grommets, laces, starch, paint, etc.
- Recycled fabric may only be used as a lining that doesn’t show. Percentage of new material should not exceed 10% of total garment.
- Footwear made from trash is preferred. Street shoes are acceptable. Shoes must be safe to walk in.
- Good workmanship is encouraged. Garments must be constructed well enough to fit the model and hold together for (at least) all rehearsals [2] and all stage shows [2].
- Designs should be repairable at show in emergency situations.
Garment materials which are NOT acceptable include:
- Reconstructed or reused clothing or fabrics, any materials which have not been previously used at least once.
- For model and audience safety, toxic materials which give off fumes, chemicals, or particulate matter such as fiberglass insulation are unacceptable.
- Sharp edges that might cut the model or fly off the garment when on the runway are unacceptable.
Fashion Design Descriptions (Blurbs):
- Each outfit should have a title, by-line, and short text description that makes a statement, social commentary, or observation that describes the outfit and its materials.
- The description must be consistent with the Trash Fashion Show message of reducing waste and finding creative reuse opportunities for our garbage. Do your best to make this entertaining or amusing and appropriate for all ages. The Fashion Show Coordinators may, at their discretion, shorten or lengthen Blurbs as needed, but will communicate with you about this.
- The length of the text should not exceed 45 seconds when read aloud.
- Text must fit on a 4 X 6 index card written in 14pt Times New Roman font.
Fashion Show Rehearsal:
Rehearsal will be scheduled for just prior to the event (dates and times to be announced – most likely to take place in the afternoon on the day of the show, or the evening before). When announced, we will expect you to have your model and your finished piece at this rehearsal.
Fashion Models:
If you do not have a model for your piece please let us know at the time of your submission and we will help you find one. Models will be required to be at the rehearsal as well as the show. A photo waiver will need to be signed by all models and designers in the fashion show, releasing permission for future use of photos taken the night of the event(s).
Image Submission:
- Complete and send the attached submission form. For adequate consideration, please submit quality photographs (digital photos are recommended) of up to three (3) individual pieces.
- Please submit one (1) to three (3) photos per piece that is being submitted.
- Photo files should be sent in jpg format via email or on CD. Please use the following naming convention for your digital images: artistsname-title.jpg * Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope to return photos/slides. *
