What is Green Demolition aka Deconstruction?

Green demolition or "deconstruction" is a form of building demolition that utilizes a combination of machine and hand-dismantling to recover materials for reuse. This can include everything from structural framing beams to flooring and fixtures. The RE Store specializes in whole-building deconstruction, which is economically competitive with regular demolition and allows for the reuse up to 50 percent of most structures. Unusable materials like drywall or splintered lumber is recycled. This process leaves only 1-2 percent of an entire building as trash.

Our licensed and bonded crews are renowned for clean and efficient work and have a long roster of satisfied customers. Our services are fully adaptable to full or partial removal of structures.

The RE Store's deconstruction program began in 2000. Since then, our crews have worked with hundreds of contractors and demolition companies throughout Western Washington. In 2004-05, we conducted a series of detailed statistical case studies that confirmed our experiences. Deconstruction is price competitive with conventional demolition, when all costs and benefits are taken into consideration.

Special thanks to Mike Davidson who recorded this video of the 8-day green demolition deconstruction project and edited it down to 1 minute. Thanks Mike!

How does it work?

The RE Store will preview and provide a full bid for the project. A contract is signed and work commences. Buildings are stripped out and then deconstructed from the top down. At the end of the project, all of the usable materials are tallied. The client pays for our service and then receives a tax receipt for the donation of all the reusable materials. Some tax receipts have totaled $10,000.00 or more.

* Call us before you get bids or make plans for your project to find out what we can pick up or salvage at no cost to you.

Why choose green demolition aka deconstruction?

whydodecon1The construction and demolition industries are responsible for one-quarter of the waste stream in the U.S.  As dump fees and hauling costs continue to increase, deconstruction is the best option for reducing disposal. By choosing deconstruction, up to 98% of a building can be diverted from the waste stream for reuse or recycling. All materials salvaged by The RE Store are considered donations and are tax-deductible. Building permits in Seattle, Bellingham and other areas in Puget Sound have expedited incentives for salvage and deconstruction.

Benefits include:

  • Reduced disposal fees
  • Reduced dust, noise impact for neighbors and soil compaction
  • Reduced environmental impact for sensitive sites like shoreline properties
  • Green building certification points for L.E.E.D., Built Green, etc. are available
  • Tax receipts for donated materials that would incur disposal fees in conventional demolition (Consult a tax professional for details)
  • Stewardship principles are practiced on-site, adding to the growing trend in reducing impacts on our finite natural resources

We visit residential and commercial job sites daily to preview projects and reduce the labor and disposal costs of our clients.
